The Alpha Course

St. Luke's is committed to ongoing instruction and teaching in the Christian faith. Alpha is a course in the basics of Christianity and consists of 10 weekly sessions on Sunday evenings and a weekend retreat.

Each week begins with a light dinner, followed by a video teaching and ends with table discussions. The safe non-threatening approach makes it a great place to bring relatives and friends for exposure to the Gospel.

People attend for a wide variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any point to life; others are concerned about what happens after death. Still others may have attended church on and off all their lives but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith.

People come from many different backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints - but all come with the same objective: to establish whether Jesus Christ has any real relevance for their lives.

Session Topics:

            Who is Jesus?
            Why did Jesus die?
How can I be sure of my faith?
Why and how should I read the bible?
Why and how should I pray?
            How does God guide us?
            Who is the Holy Spirit?
What does the Holy Spirit do?
How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?
How can I make the most of the rest of my life?
            How can I resist evil?
Why and How should I tell others?
            Does God heal today?
            What about the church?

T
he evangelism, equipping, and discipleship ministries of the three Alpha-related programs detailed below make up the strongest and most visible part of our church’s intake and formative educational curriculum for adults.

At the center of the triumvirate, is the Alpha Program which is well-known to this congregation. Lesser known, is the Encounter Weekend, a three-day retreat designed to pick-up the Alpha graduate and move he or she to a place of even deeper forgiveness, and strength through the Holy Spirit. Our first Encounter Weekends (men’s and women’s) are scheduled for the fall of each year. Finally, the Disciple’s Life series takes the basic Alpha training and helps the attendee develop a strong walk which is designed to bring a lifetime of support and fulfillment in Christ.

A strong church growth plan suggests that new Christians (and new members) be engaged in these three ministries as soon as practicable. Alpha and its related programs are the strongest tools we currently possess… if we will utilize them to their fullest potential.
