How to Participate

When Heaven Invades Earth

Week 11 May 4 - 10, 2008

Chapter 15 pgs. 157-64

  1. Why do you think so many have missed a visitation from God after they had spent time praying for it? Does a strong relationship with God prevent such things? Why or why not?
  2. Why do you think recognizing our need is so important to the believer? How desperate are you for God?
  3. What does “dull of heart” mean? Why does this condition prevent spiritual sight? How can someone keep “current” with what God is doing?
  4. Quenching the Spirit is responsible for ending revival prematurely. When  people are uncomfortable with what God is doing, they seek control and understanding. How does this quench the Spirit? What do you do when you are uncomfortable with what God is doing?
  5. In Acts 2, the disciples just had an encounter with God without a chapter and verse to explain what just happened.  Peter, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, chose to use Joel 2 as the proof-text to give the needed backbone to their experience (Acts 2 had none of the things mentioned in Joel). The very fact that this seems like an improper interpretation of Scripture should reveal to us that it is we who often approach His book incorrectly. “The Word does not contain God – it reveals Him.” What is the difference between confining or corralling God and explaining what God does? What do we have to avoid when we give explanation for how God is working?
  6. “We miss God when we live as though we have Him figured out. We have the habit of making Him look like us. In fact, if we think we understand Him we have probably conformed Him into our image. ...To endeavor to know Him is to embark on an adventure in which questions increase.”(164). Think about your relationship wit God. Is there mystery involved in it? Do you see your relationship as an adventure? Do questions increase because of growing intimacy?
