Week 7: April 6 – April 12, 2008
Chapters 10 and 11: pg. 107 – 131
Topic: Powerlessness: Unnecessary, Unbalanced and Costly
1. Johnson makes the point of stating
that choosing between power and character is an unjustifiable,
illegitimate choice; that we need both of these to be obedient to
the Lord. How and why do those who want character before signs and
wonders build a religious mind-set in themselves? What are some of
the dangers of seeking power without character?
2. “...the only real issue is obedience...Character is shaped
through obedience..abandon(ing) ourselves completely to his will”
(107,108,111) Because the Lord is our Commander, we don't (are not
to) choose when we will obey. That means we may not think we are
ready when he asks us, but we must obey anyway. Is this a step of
faith? What makes us choose obedience instead of the questions in
our mind? How does such obedience build character?
3. Consider for a moment the concept of you being clothed with God's
ability, his power from on high. What does that mean in terms of
potential? In terms of responsibility? Why do you think so many are
fearful of the Holy Spirit? What price do you need to pay to receive
power from on high?
4. Give a description of what you think revival is. Have you ever
experienced revival? What is the cost of revival and the
accompanying glory? Do you think most Christians are willing to pay
the price? Why or why not?
5. Explain how miracles reveal the nature of God. In what ways do
they make God more real to you? What part of God's character becomes
real through seeing the miraculous?
6. “A glass is only full when it overflows. Fullness can only be
measured by overflow. The fullness of God ought to do more for me
than give me a spiritual language. ... His purposes brings us into
more, to a divine partnership in which we become co-laborers with
Christ” (When129). Are you full of God? Do you have a regular
overflow that is measurable? What does your partnership with God
look like?
